Thank you, Marian

Estas fotos son de hace un mes y medio, cuando fue su cumpleaños y le llevé como regalo una torta de limón.

These photos are a month and a half old, when it was her birthday and I took her a lemon cake as a present.

Marian es la mamá de mi amigo Jonathan. La conocí en 1999 cuando vine al Reino Unido por segunda vez. Me quedé en su casa y nunca me cansaba de su ingenio, inteligencia y sentido del humor. Cuando me tuve que ir, pensé que nunca la iba a ver otra vez (porque nunca me hubiera imaginado que iba a volver a Inglaterra – y menos a vivir!) entonces antes de despedirme le dije que había sido un placer hablar con ella, escucharla y aprender de ella. Recuerdo las palabras vívidamente porque salían de mi corazón, no era un discurso que había preparado. Pero seguimos en contacto a través de alguna llamada telefónica o tarjeta.

Honestamente, me puse contenta enterarme de que teníamos la oportunidad de volver a Inglaterra porque eso significaba que iba a poder ver a Marian otra vez!

Una de las primeras cosas que hice fue ir a visitarla y hasta hoy trato de ir cuando es posible (aunque no quiero aburrirla! – en serio!)

Lo raro es que ella es la que a veces me dice “Alicia, te debo estar aburriendo con todo lo que hablo”, a lo que yo siempre le aseguro que no es el caso.

Marian es cálida y afectuosa, atenta y muy activa. Además, siempre tiene algo interesante para contar. Escucharla es, para mí, como viajar a través del tiempo y aprender historia. Es culta e instruída y si hay algo que no se acuerda o de lo que no está segura, agarra un libro o lo chequea en internet enseguida.

Si uno tiene una duda acerca del origen de una palabra o frase o se pregunta la razón de algo, ella te lo explica pero también trae libros, enciclopedias, de todo!

Y siempre es como ir a una clase de inglés académico avanzado por las palabras y expresiones que usa, aprendo todo el tiempo!

Por éso, el título de este post.

Marian is my friend Jonathan’s mum. I met her back in 1999 when I came to the UK for the second time. I stayed at their home and never tired of her wit, intelligence and sense of humour. When I had to leave, I thought I was never going to see her again (because I would have never thought I would come back to England – let alone to live here!) so before I said goodbye I told her that it had been a pleasure to talk to her, to listen to her and to learn from her. I remember the words very vividly as they came out of my heart; it wasn’t a speech I had prepared. But we kept in touch through a phone call or a card.

So I honestly say that I was really pleased to learn that we had the chance to go back to England because that meant I would get to see Marian again!

One of the first things I did was to visit her and to this day I try to call whenever possible (although I don’t want to bore her! – really!)

Funnily enough, she’s the one who sometimes says “Alicia, I must be boring you with all I say”, and I always assure her it’s not the case.

Marian is warm and affectionate, attentive and very active. Besides, she always has something interesting to tell. Listening to her is, for me, like travelling through time and learning history. She’s learned and educated and if there’s something she doesn’t remember or she’s not sure about, she gets a book or checks it on the internet right away.

If you have a doubt about the origin of a word or phrase or wonder about the reason of something, she explains that to you but she also brings along books, encyclopaedias, anything!

And it’s always like attending an advanced academic English class because of the words and expressions she uses, I learn all the time!

So that’s why the title of this post.
